Swing dancing comes in many forms. Lindyhop, the original form of swing dancing, was created in Harlem in 1927. The dance became popular throughout the 30's and 40's as jazz music and big bands swept the nation. The different types of Swing dancing are: Lindyhop, West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, Jitterbug, Country Swing, and a variety of other steps and forms. For more information on the different types of Swing dancing, visit our glossary page.
Yes & No. Swing dancing is a very fun way to learn how to dance and get a little exercise. You can put it as much or as little effort as you want. Many people learn how to dance just so they can meet new people and have a good night out. Others take their dancing to the next level and compete. While challenging, Swing dancing, when taught right, is all about having fun and improving yourself.
Here in Las Vegas, we have a variety of instructors who teach a variety of different Swing dances in venues all over the Valley. You can find out more about individual instructors by visiting our instructors page. For venues, classes, and times, visit the lessons page.
What's the point in learning how to dance, if you don't have some place to go and show it off! The SwingVegasSwing.com calendar will show you all of the places to Swing dance in Sin City. Our featured events can even be found on our home page, by clicking on the banners.
While thought mainly to be a dance for "old" people, Swing dancing actually is danced by people of all ages. We have dancers as young as 15 here in Las Vegas. It's a wonderful atmosphere for the family, for working professionals looking for a fun night out, or for the couple who has been together for 50 years and just wants to spends some more quality time on the dance floor.
Absolutely. We encourage you to take as many different types of lessons as possible. Most classes that are promoted through SwingVegasSwing.com stay true to the roots of swing dancing, teaching as close to the original dances as possible. Heavy emphasis on leading and following technique is always found in our classes, as well as the history & knowledge of swing dancing. The easiest way to explain the difference is that SwingVegasSwing.com is into the promotion of "street" swing, and as it is our only dance, we can focus solely on it. There are some wonderful ballroom studios around (see our links page to some of our favorite or visit www.DancinVegas.com (coming in 2010) for classes & schools near you) and we would love to supplement your learning.
Lindyhop is seen as a very athletic dance, and tends to favor the younger generations. However, Swing dancing is danced by people of all ages, and the twenty-somethings shouldn't dissuade you from coming out.
Absolutely not. While we do have dances that are 21 and over and cater to a more adult-oriented crowd (Aruba), we do have dances that are all ages and we encourage the entire family to come out. There have been countless movies made about dancing in the schools, and SwingVegasSwing.com is proud to do our part to support a younger generation of dancer. Swing dancing itself is a very healthy activity that teaches children the discipline of a dance and the graces of social interaction.
Back in the 40's, a male "Jitterbug" wore striped socks. As an homage to that time, those dancers who consider themselves "Jitterbugs" also wear striped socks. And yes, most of them we get from the women's section.
Of course. A large majority of our dancers are single men and women who just enjoy having a good time out. Dancing is a great way to meet members of the opposite sex, and it is seen as completely normal for men to dance with multiple women throughout the night. There is no need to bring your own partner, there will be plenty there!
YES! In today's economy, it's easy to pass on the luxuries of life (like learning how to dance). Luckily, Las Vegas offers a few different lessons taught by national champion instructors all for free! Most of our dances are also completely free. Even if you can only spare a buck or two to give to your server who is refilling your water, it will be appreciated!
That is entirely up to you. Many people find swing dancing a challenge, and stick just to that dance. Others find the need to learn as many different types of dances as possible. We encourage everyone to do what makes them feel good and to spend their money however they seem fit.
